Review: Rimmel Soft Kohl Eye Liner

I picked this little eye liner up from a Boots store in Manchester a few weeks ago. At the time there was a promotion, so I picked it up in two shades - the black and the grey. As a girl who is looking for a quick and easy what to do a winged liner with a pencil, what do I think of them?

THE PACKAGING
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Average, like any other pencil liner packaging really. My only annoyance with it was when I originally purchased the products they weren't in any plastic outer packaging, so when I took the lid off some, they looked like they'd been swatched and some of the ends looked pretty used when they weren't the marked tester - it's not the packaging itself but it took me a while to find one that hadn't been used, and did make me doubt the hygienic-ness of the stand.

THE COLOUR RANGE

I have this in the colours 061 Jet Black and 064 Stormy Grey - Boots were selling six colours in total. I bought these two shades because I thought they'd be really good for a smoky eye. I hadn't tried a grey liner before so it did intrigue me. The entire colour range seem to be really wearable shades with nothing too bold or dramatic, the waterproof scandaleyes kohl liner has a wider, brighter colour range which I think I'd go for if I was looking for something to give more of a statement. The colour is applied exactly as it looks, and especially with the black one- Jet black shade really is Jet Black! The liners do need to be built up to give a good intensity - the swatches below show one swipe.

THE FORMULA

Really blendable - exactly what I look for in a pencil eye liner. I really like this formula, it isn't chalky at all, and it doesn't flake, however it does slightly rub off on the out edge of my eye as the day goes on so I wouldn't say the staying power is the best. That perfect cat eye I was looking for - this doesn't give it. The wing definitely rubs away as the day goes on. Considering Rimmel claim that this is fade resistant, I am a bit disappointed with the formula's staying power.

THE PENCIL
_____________________________________________________________________________________

By 'the pencil' I mean the way it sharpens. I have a No7 Pencil Eye Liner that I really loved until I tried to sharpen it - the pencil was really brittle and became really stratchy when I applied it. This isn't like that at all, it hasn't flaked and I've sharpened it once and it still looks like new! A big tick on this one for me!

THE PRICE
_____________________________________________________________________________________

These eye liners are sold at £2.99. The scandaleyes liners are sold at £3.99 and if you want staying power and for them to be waterproof from what I've heard it seems to be better to spend the extra pound and go for one of those. However, for £2.99 I do think they are good value - they are a really good budget eye liner.

THE VERDICT

These are a firm favourite in my make up draw. I wouldn't say they are my favourite Rimmel product, and they aren't the best kohl eye liner in the world, however for £2.99 I think they have a great colour payoff, the range of colours are wearable for both every day looks as well as a heavier smoky eye. They are blendable, comfortable, don't irritate my eye when I wear them on my water line and they give a precise finish!
It's a thumbs up from me!

What do you think to these eye liners? Is there one you would recommend me to try?
